Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday regained possession at the top of the Premier League table when Ange Postecoglou’s team beat Fulham 2-0 at their home. Goals from Son Heung-min, and James Maddison secured the win for the North London side. Tottenham have 23 points from 9 matches, two more than second-placed Manchester City.
Tottenham had won 13 of their last 15 Premier League games against Fulham, with the exceptions both coming in home games. Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou made just one change from his side that won 1-0 against Luton. It’s was an enforced switch as Hojbjerg came in for the suspended Bissouma who was sent off in that fixture.
Fulham have enjoyed a solid, if slightly unremarkable start to their second season in the Premier League under Marco Silva. They sit 12th but had lost just one of their last five games in all competitions before the international break. Silva made two changes to his Fulham side that won 3-1 over Sheffield United. In central defence, the injured Diop was replaced by the returning Bassey, while Lukic came in for Iwobi in midfield.
Spurs dominated possession early on with captain Son seeing a lot of the ball. Willian and co. looked ineffective against an organised Tottenham set-up. Spurs got the breakthrough in the 36th minute through captain Son. Fulham lost the ball cheaply in defence and Richarlison capitalised on the loose ball. He found Son, who shifted the ball inside onto his right foot before unleashing a vicious curling effort into the top corner from the edge of the box.
James Maddison, who moved to North London from Leicester City in the summer of 2023 doubled Spurs’ lead in the second half through another Fulham mistake. Bassey’s mistake proved to be instrumental again as Hojbjerg made the interception. The loose ball fell to Son, who slid through Maddison and the Englishman made no mistake, calmly finishing past Leno.
