There was plenty of action during the first period, just not much of it that troubled the two goalkeepers. Everton had the best two chances, Demarai Gray getting away from Rodrigo Bentancur down the left but blazing over the bar from the edge of the six-yard box, before Amadou Onana capitalised on some hesitation in midfield to streak clear but fired over with just Hugo Lloris to beat. Spurs were having plenty of possession, lots of it in the final third but the clear chance just wouldn’t quite materialise.

There seemed much more purpose to our attacking play after the break and we almost went ahead on 53 minutes, Ben Davies picking out Kane, his right-foot volley was well saved by Pickford and Son lashed the rebound over. But we found the breakthrough on 59 minutes. Pickford failed to hold onto Matt Doherty’s low drive, Kane was first to the loose ball and was brought down by Pickford. Kane missed a penalty at the same end three days ago against Eintracht Frankfurt. He made no mistake this time, beating his England colleague with sheer power and pace.
The points were wrapped up four minutes from time when Bentancur picked out Hojbjerg from the right flank, the Danish international cutting inside Alex Iwobi and curling right-footed into the top corner, the ball taking a nick off Iwobi on its way in.
