When discussing Bellingham’s €103 million transfer to the Spanish city, which the La Liga heavyweights revealed on Wednesday, Kroos made that admission on Eden Hazard.
“€103m transfer fee? We now also had someone who came for a lot of money and virtually let his career rest. A lot of money and I think everyone would say in retrospect: That was not such a good transfer. But now let’s start from the positive.” the German said on his podcast Einfach mal Luppen.
Hazard left Chelsea in 2019 for a whopping €115 million (£98 million/£124 million). During his seven years with the club, Hazard set a record by winning Chelsea’s Player of the Year a record four times.
Earlier this month, when Madrid decided to sever the winger’s contract a year early, the Belgian put an end to his turbulent stint in the Spanish capital. However, after just 76 games and four injury-plagued seasons with Los Blancos, in which he contributed 19 goals, that deal is now regarded as one of the worst in recent memory.

It is believed that Bellingham’s departure from Borussia Dortmund will secure the Bundesliga powerhouses £88.5 million. It is comparable to what Madrid spent for Hazard’s in 2019, but it will increase to £113.5 million after the midfielder fulfils a set of attainable performance-related add-ons. Bellingham will reportedly be introduced during a presentation event on Thursday in Madrid and then will appear before the media.
Bellingham joins an already talented young midfield that includes Kylian Mbappe, who Real are apparently interested in. Kroos believes that Karim Benzema’s decision to leave the club after 14 years and several trophies in lieu of joining Saudi champions Al-Ittihad should not damage the Frenchman’s image.
