Premier League club Liverpool FC on Friday announced their manager Jurgen Klopp will step down from his role after the end of this season. Klopp, who joined Liverpool nine years ago, will leave as one of the most successful managers in the club’s history. He helped the club win the Premier League after a 30-year wait and won the UEFA Champions League in 2019. Now, with Klopp’s imminent departure, the question arises about who will replace the German at the prestigious Premier League club. Insidesport takes a look at the potential candidates that can replace Klopp at Liverpool after the end of the current season.
Xavi Alonso
Xavi Alonso will probably be the most logical choice to be Klopp’s successor. Alonso was important part in of the Merseyside team during the early 2000s, helping the team win the Champions League 2005. He is a well-liked figure in the club, accustomed with the club’s DNA. Alonso is at the moment in charge of Bundesliga club Bayern Leverkusen. He is doing a wonderful job in Germany. Bayern Leverkusen is on top of Bundesliga with a 4 point gap over German giants Bayern Munich. His attacking style of play has impressed the supporters and critics alike. If he manages to take the Liverpool job, it will be one of the best recruits in Liverpool history.
Julian Nagelsmann
The 36-year-old former Bayern Munich manager took charge of the national team in September of last year. However, he is only contracted until July 2024 and would be free to leave after this summer’s European Championship. The pair previously shared the same agent – Marc Kosicke – and Klopp described Nagelsmann as a “young horse” and a “big, big coaching talent”. If Nagelsmann is approached by the Liverpool, one thing is for sure, he will have Liverpool’s former boss’ blessings.
Steven Gerrard
At one point, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard looked certain to return to the club, having led Rangers to the Scottish league crown after leaving a role in the club’s academy. Gerrard’s time at Aston Villa, however, has been troubled and his managerial reputation has taken a nosedive. The Saudi Pro League may not be the best place for him to rebuild his reputation, but he remains a popular figure within the club’s supporters and impressed Jurgen Klopp when he was manager of Liverpool’s U18s.
