Thomas Muller likely to retire from Germany following Euro Cup exit

From his debut in 2010 to his World Cup victory in 2014, Müller has consistently demonstrated his class and commitment to the national team

Germany legend Thomas Muller is set to retire from international football following Germany’s crushing Euro 2024 defeat to Spain. After Germany’s disappointing exit in the quarter-finals with a 2-1 loss, the 34-year-old hinted that the match might be his last appearance for Die Mannschaft.

What did Thomas Muller say after Euro 2024 exit?

According to Bild Sport, Muller has indeed played his final match for Germany and will soon announce his retirement from international duty. He follows in the footsteps of Toni Kroos, who retired from international football after the Euros and from football entirely. However, Müller will continue playing for Bayern Munich, honouring his contract, which runs until 2025.

“Realistically speaking, it is possible that this was my last international match,” Muller stated. “I will sit down with the national coach afterward. We have a very trusting relationship. But as I said, realistically, it is quite possible.”

Thomas Muller’s contributions to Germany

For over a decade, Muller has been a pivotal figure in German football, known for his versatility, intelligence, and goal-scoring prowess. His contributions extend beyond his on-field performance, showcasing his leadership and influence within the squad. His international career began in March 2010 with a debut in a friendly against Argentina. Over the years, he has accumulated 131 caps and scored 45 goals for Germany. Only Lothar Matthäus (150 caps, 63 goals) and Miroslav Klose (137 caps, 46 goals) surpass Müller’s record for the national team.

Muller’s imminent retirement from international football marks the end of an era in German football. From his debut in 2010 to his World Cup victory in 2014, Müller has consistently demonstrated his class and commitment to the national team. The 34-year-old’s journey has been one of passion, dedication, and success, earning him a place among the legends of the game.
