Team selection woes continue for Stimac ahead of India vs China Asian Games opener

Team selection woes continue for Stimac ahead of India vs China Asian Games opener

Coach Igor Stimac of the Indian Men's Football Team continues to struggle with team selection as the athletes arrive in Hangzou exhausted and sleep-deprived for the opening of the Asian Games in 2023.

Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. India time, the Indian men’s football team will take the pitch against the Asian Games hosts, China. They will arrive in the host city in about four or five hours and play their first game there in less than 18.

India would be without the services of five of the 22 players chosen for the Asian Games for the opening match against China. The team is missing Aniket Jadhav, Narender Gahlot, Chinglensana Singh, Gurkirat Singh, and Lalchungnung. They will arrive in China over the course of the next several days in separate groups.

The group took off from Delhi at 10 p.m. yesterday and arrived in Singapore at an early hour today. They had an 11-hour layover before boarding the aircraft bound for China. Due to overbooking at the airport hotel in Singapore, the players, who were sleep-deprived, managed to get some rest at the spa.

Only two defenders from India will be eligible for selection against China. Igor Stimac has stated that he will not risk the likes of Sunil Chhetri and Sandesh Jhingan for the China game. The Indian men’s football team coach would rather focus on games against Bangladesh and China.
