Sunil Chhetri returns to playing field for first time since international retirement

The 39-year-old stated emphatically at the Bangalore Football Stadium that he intends to 'enjoy' his game and will continue to play until he 'can add value in the team.'

Former India captain Sunil Chhetri returned to the football field for the first time since hanging up his boots at the international level. Chhetri looked calm, composed and assured as he took the pitch with his Bengaluru FC teammates in the team’s first practice session ahead of a busy season.

Sunil Chhetri back to familiar surroundings

The 39-year-old stated emphatically at the Bangalore Football Stadium that he intends to “enjoy” his game and will continue to play until he “can add value in the team.”

Chhetri has been pretty clear while announcing his international retirement that he would continue to play football till the time he feels his body and mind are ready to take it.

Value addition of utmost importance for Sunil Chhetri

With the national team, I think I did it (retirement) at the right time. It has given me a lot of perspective. So, I just want to come and enjoy it,” Chhetri said.

I have no idea as to how long I will play. Lot of it will depend on what value I bring to the team. That is one of the most important criteria because of the kind of life I have lived in football, especially at this club. This is my club. I don’t want to be here if I don’t add value. Till the time I add value to the team, I will be here, that is one of the criteria, next is family,” Chhetri added.
