It marks PSG’s seventh championship in the previous 11 seasons, a span during which it has dominated French football while owned by Qatar. With just six points left to play for and a far higher goal differential than Lens, PSG entered the penultimate weekend of the season six points ahead of their closest competitor. By defeating relegated Ajaccio 3-0 at home, Lens earned second place and automatic qualification for the Champions League the following season.

Before the hour mark, Kylian Mbappe assisted Messi in giving PSG the lead with his 16th Ligue 1 goal of the year. With 11 minutes remaining, former Paris attacker Gameiro levelled by putting in the rebound after Gianluigi Donnarumma had stopped Morgan Sanson.

In the end, the draw benefited both clubs since it allowed Strasbourg to secure its place in the top division. Prior to the World Cup, PSG had a fantastic start to the season and did not drop a match in any tournament. However, it dropped six of its first 17 league games in 2023, fell to Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League, and reached the same stage in the French Cup.
