The match started on a positive note with the Red Devils keen to open the scoring. Though the hosts came close to scoring, Pedro Porro’s shot hit the crossbar before being deflected away. The two sides headed into the break goalless after both sides having made a total of 21 shots towards each other.
Spurs built pressure early in the second half and were handsomely rewarded when Pape Matar Sarr opened the account for the visitors. After a scuffle in the box, Sarr’s left-footed shot in the 49th minute stunned the Red Devils as the Spurs rejoiced.
The second half was all about Spurs. Manchester United’s Antony came close to equalizing within minutes after Sarr’s goal after his left-footed shot hit the upright. Lisandro Martinez then sealed his side’s fate by deflecting Ben Davies’ scuffed effort past his own keeper in the 83rd minute.
Both sides were denied by the woodwork in a free-flowing contest and United’s Bruno Fernandes wasted a glorious opportunity but Postecoglou’s Tottenham deserved the three points for a vibrant second-half display.
Despite the sale of talisman and club record scorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich on the eve of the new season, Tottenham have started the campaign positively with four points from their opening two games. United have three points.
