Spanish Super Cup: In a thrilling El Clasico clash, Real took the lead three times, with Barca coming back twice before Valverde eventually made it 3-2.

Vinicius Junior put Los Blancos ahead, only to be pegged back by Luuk de Jong. Karim Benzema restored Madrid’s advantage, but Ansu Fati replied once more for the Catalan club to send the contest into extra time.

Madrid took their third and decisive lead as Federico Valverde converted following a swift counter to secure the win for Carlo Ancelotti’s men, defeating Barca for the fifth time on the bounce. Madrid advance to the Super Cup final where they will play either Atletico Madrid or Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. Barcelona are next in action in the Copa del Rey next week on the road to Athletic Bilbao in the round of 16.

Spanish Super Cup: Real Madrid emerged victorious from a thrilling Supercopa de España semi-final clash with Barcelona in Riyadh which was decided by a winning goal after extra-time.

Scorers: Luuk de Jong 41′, Ansu Fati 83′; Vinícius Jr 25′, Benzema 72′, Valverde 98′

Marco Asensio and Vinícius Jr both had chances to score in the early stages, and it was the Brazilian who then did open the scoring for Real Madrid mid-way through the first half with a great finish into the top corner after being slipped in by Karim Benzema.

Luuk de Jong then had a couple of chances to equalise for Barça in quick succession, but both headers were saved by Thibaut Courtois. But four minutes before half-time, De Jong did find the net when Éder Militão’s attempted clearance struck the Dutchman and went in off the post to make it 1-1.

Barça made a bright start to the second half, with Ousmane Dembélé and Pedri both missing chances to make it 2-1. Benzema then went close to putting Madrid 2-1 up when he hit the post, but just a few minutes later the Frenchman did find the net when he tucked home a rebound off the goalkeeper.

But there was to be another twist as Barcelona substitute Ansu Fati drew them level again in the 83rd minute with a header from Jordi Alba’s cross. With the score level after 90 minutes, the match went to extra-time.

And in the 98th minute Los Blancos took the lead for a third time, with Federico Valverde slotting home at the end of an incisive counter-attack. It proved to the the winning goal, and Carlo Ancelotti’s side will now face the winner of Thursday’s semi-final between Atlético Madrid and Athletic Club in Sunday’s final.
