Coach Fernando Santos made six changes from the lineup that defeated Uruguay to earn qualification for the knockout stages, resting Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Joao Felix. Joao Mario of Benfica and Matheus Nunes of Wolves were called up, as was Manchester United fullback Diogo Dalot. Tottenham attacker Son Heung-Min captained the Koreans. Napoli center-back Kim Min-jae sat on the bench due to a calf injury sustained during the competition, while energetic Mallorca winger Lee Kang-in was one of three alterations.

Portugal took the lead five minutes into the game at Education City Stadium. Horta finishes well from close range. Dalot raced to the byline before cutting the ball back to Horta on the six-yard line. The winger fired a first-time shot into the far corner.

Korea could have found an equalizer soon enough. Costa makes a good effort to deny Cho Gue-sung, whose header was cleared out. The rebound is put in, but it is offside. However, they found one soon.  Kim Young-gwon scored from close range after the ball landed in front of him from a corner kick. Portugal immediately began an attack. Kim Seung-gyu of Korea rushed out and pulled a spectacular stop to deny Ronaldo a goal in a one-on-one situation. He made a few of saves to keep Korea in the game. Minutes later, he made another outstanding diving effort to prevent Diogo Dalot from scoring. He even performed a leaping clearance to prevent Vitinha from scoring from the edge of the box. Ronaldo headed the rebound well wide of the goal. The teams headed into halftime in a tie.

Coming from the break South Korea were desperate for a win. Heung Min Son saw a lot of his efforts being parried away. The breakthrough finally came in the added minutes of the game. Hwang Hee-chan scored from the penalty spot for Korea, igniting the nation’s hopes. Son broke free for a counterattack from the corner of Portugal, sprinted to the edge of the Portugal box, and brilliantly passed the ball to Hee-chan, who finished it coolly. The goal sent South Korea to the second points in the table and through to Round of 16.
