‘Show respect’ Angry Didier Drogba intervenes as French fans boo Emiliano Martinez

As Emiliano Martínez receives the Yashin Trophy during the Ballon d'Or 2023 ceremony, Didier Drogba steps in to stop the French crowd from jeering him.

At the Ballon d’Or presentation, Didier Drogba interrupted and requested the French supporters to be respectful of Emiliano Martinez. Emiliano Martinez, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 2022, accepted the Yashin Trophy at the 2023 Ballon d’Or. However, as the custodian took the stage at the Théâtre du Chatelet in Paris, the supporters of France jeered him.

The screen showed Martinez’s stop of Randal Kolo Muani’s last-second goal from the 2022 World Cup final as he headed on stage to accept his prize. There were boos from the French supporters in the amphitheatre towards the stopper.

At one point, the ceremony’s host, former Chelsea player Didier Drogba, had to step in and tell the audience to honour the winner of the award. The veteran striker asked the hecklers to cease and give the World Cup champion some dignity.
