On Wednesday, Sevilla defeated AS Roma 4-1 on penalties to win the Europa League for a record-tying eighth time, delivering Jose Mourinho his first defeat in six European finals. Five months after scoring the winning penalty for Argentina in the World Cup final, Gonzalo Montiel converted the clinching spot kick to complete the shootout triumph in Budapest after the match concluded 1-1 after extra time.

A fiercely contested game went into extra time when Gianluca Mancini’s own goal cancelled out Paulo Dybala’s well-taken opening, and Sevilla won the shootout. More coaching and technical personnel in each dugout received yellow cards than players.

Yassine Bounou of Sevilla saved penalty kicks from Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibanez. Sevilla’s execution was excellent, as seen by their first four goals. After extra time, the score was 1-1.

In the 35th minute, Paulo Dybala scored in a counter-attack for the Italians. However, Sevilla regained control of the game and equalised in the 55th minute due to an own-goal by Mancini.

After Dybala intercepted Mancini’s defense-splitting pass and allowed the ball to glide over his body onto his preferred left boot and hit the far corner in one smooth move in the 35th minute, the Andalucian club’s aura of invincibility came under pressure.

But ten minutes into the second half, Mancini’s own goal gave Sevilla a point, ending a particularly heated exchange..

After a dull overtime session, Montiel scored the game-winning penalty to win the match. Importantly, he did so only after earning a retake after goalkeeper Rui Patricio was found to have interfered with his initial attempt, which was saved.
