SAFF Championship 2021 Live: India vs Bangladesh – Sunil Chhetri & Co aim SAFF title – The Indian football team will be up against tricky opposition when they take on Bangladesh in their SAFF Championship opener in the Maldives on Monday. Dubbed as title favourites for the regional competition, Sunil Chhetri’s side have won the tournament seven times out of the 12 editions and will be expected to do so again this time around. Bangladesh meanwhile will be aiming for a repeat of their World Cup qualifiers performance when they held India to a draw.

The SAFF Championship is the premier football championship among South-Asian Nations and this edition will see India participate alongside the likes of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives and Nepal. Bhutan and Pakistan are amongst the usual participants, but the former opted out while the latter has been banned by FIFA for violation of FIFA Statutes.

While India remain favourites, Igor Stimac’s side has looked rusty in recent times and will need to be at their best to see off Bangladesh. The neighbours had given the Blue Tigers a run for their money, with Chhetri and Co. needing a late equaliser during their World Cup qualifier in Kolkata. The Indians did win the second leg 2-0, but Bangladesh will pose a tricky test.

Ahead of the game, Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri said that each match during the tournament will be like a war. The prolific striker said, “Bangladesh are a very difficult side. In the two matches we played against Bangladesh in the last few months, it has been very tough. All the matches (of the tournament) will be tough. Despite a little bit of superiority, we may have, every game will be like a war to fight. We have to fight to the last minute. We cannot play 90 per cent.”

Head coach Igor Stimac added, “The first game is always the most difficult game. We respect Bangladesh. We respect each and every team playing out here, and they have an equal chance to win the tournament.”
