SAFF Congress 2023: AIFF secretary general Shaji Prabhakaran elected as AFC’s executive committee member

‘The championship will start in the middle of next year on a home and away basis. The details of the championship, however, will be given following discussions among the members of the associations,’ SAFF president Kazi Salahuddin told reporters after the congress.

Sahahuddin, who is also the president of the Bangladesh Football Federation, assumed control of the South Asian football governing body in 2009 and has been promoting the notion of a UEFA Champions League-style competition in the area for more than ten years.

Due to a lack of support from sponsors up until this point, the proposal has not materialised. However, the SAFF executive committee made the decision to host the championship in principle during Saturday’s SAFF Ordinary Congress in Dhaka.

The 14th SAFF Championship, which will take place in Bengaluru, India, from June 21 to July 4, was also discussed during the meeting. As resolved in the last executive meeting to invite teams outside the SAFF region: Bangladesh, hosts India, Pakistan, the Maldives, Nepal, and Bhutan, the committee decided to postpone finding another team until May 15, 2023. Sri Lanka, a member of the SAFF, is now suspended by FIFA.
