SAFF Club Championship 2023: Hyderabad FC, Kerala Blasters FC to represent India in maiden edition of tournament-Check Out

The inaugural season of the SAFF Club Championship is scheduled to begin in 2023. It will feature clubs from  India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. The clubs taking part are:

  • Hyderabad FC and Kerala Blasters, the winners of the Indian Super League 2021–22, will be the two teams representing India.
  • The representative squad from Nepal will be Macchindra Football Club, winners of the Martyr’s Memorial A-Division League.
  • Bashundhara Kings, the Bangladesh Premier League’s 2021–22 champions, and Abahani Limited Dhaka, the competition’s runners-up, are both in it.

  • Maziya Sports and Recreation Club, the Dhivehi Premier League champion, will represent the Maldives in the competition. They will be joined by runners up Club Eagles.
  • Bhutan’s Paro FC, who won the Bhutan Premier League in 2021–2022, will participate in the competition.
  • The winner of the Sri Lanka Super League in 2020–21, Blue Star SC, will compete.
  • It would be Pakistan’s first return to international club tournaments since K-Electric FC participated in the AFC Cup qualifying playoffs in 2016. In the SAFF Club Championship, WAPDA FC (Water and Power Development Authority Football Club) will represent the nation.

In the ISL 2021-22 final, Hyderabad FC defeated Kerala Blasters FC 3-1 to claim the Indian Super League title. Hyderabad, led by Manolo Márquez, had previously placed second in the league phase. 38 points were earned from 20 games for them. Earlier, in the  semifinals against ATK Mohun Bagan, the Nizams triumphed 3-2 on aggregate.

However, Kerala Blasters placed fourth in the standings. they earned 34 points in due time by winning nine games and losing seven. Blasters defeated Jamshedpur FC 2-1 on aggregate over both legs to advance to the ISL playoffs for the first time since 2016. They played Hyderabad in the final game and lost on penalties.
