As Roy Keane made his way to do his post-game responsibilities for Sky Sports on Sunday, a fan is said to have attacked him inside the Emirates Stadium. The 52-year-old former Manchester United captain, according to Mail Sport, was challenged by a guy while waiting for a lift to take him down to the pitch side area at the top of the West Stand.

The guy allegedly attempted to headbutt Keane. He also striked the Irishman in the chest and jaw but sparing him major bodily harm. Social media videos from yesterday night showed Keane’s Sky Sports colleague Micah Richards attempting to stop the fan. But, by then, the spectator had already fled the area by the time security personnel arrived.

Alejandro Garnacho appeared to have won the match for United in the 88th minute before the incident. Theo Walcott, a former player for Arsenal, was working alongside Keane and Richards, who hurried back to the studio to witness what had happened. Garnacho’s goal was ultimately disallowed following a VAR review.

After being brought down to the pitchside area, Keane, who had a contentious history with Arsenal throughout his playing career, proceeded to commentate.

London MET’s statement on Keane

Following the game, Sky informed Mail Sport that the authorities are now looking into the alleged attack. The one which Richards was attempting to diffuse.

London’s Met Police confirmed they were probing the incident. The statement said, ‘We understand the police are investigating an alleged assault by a member of the public immediately preceding the footage circulating on social media. In the footage seen, Micah Richards was acting to defuse a situation.’

The statement also said, ‘Police are investigating following an assault that is alleged to have occurred at the Emirates Stadium during an Arsenal v Manchester United match on Sunday, 3 September.’

Roy Keane’s history with Arsenal

Over the years, Keane and Arsenal have had a contentious relationship. The 52-year-old’s spat with former Gunners captain Patrick Vieira has been the major source of tension between the north and the south. The illustrious pair split the English top-flight championship between 1996 and 2004 while dominating the rest of the league.

There were countless additional instances as well. Keane, who oversaw a no-nonsense strategy while serving as Man United captain, continues to this day to be regarded as one of football’s “hard-men.”

After calling it quits on their playing careers, the two finally got along again. They have since collaborated in the punditry world, but the rivalry between the two largest teams in England endures.
