Erik ten Hag continues to have a growing influence on Manchester United. Halfway through his first season, the Dutch coach has backed the pursuit of his targets in the market. Ronaldo also made an exit, with the club terminating his £500,000 a week contract.
Since then, it is reported that Manchester United have set a wage limit. The decision was taken by Ten Hag along with chief executive Richard Arnold. According to Daily Mail, the salaries of new joinees will be capped at £200,000 a week with goalkeeper David de Gea being the first to be impacted. De Gea currently earns a massive £ 375,000 a week but is in line to sign an extension on much lower terms.
Ronaldo Rule Man United: Erik Ten Hag introduces wage cap
- Following Ronaldo’s exit, Manchester United have decided to set up a salary cap.
- No player will earn more than £200,000 a week.
- Ronaldo earned £500,000 a week, while David de Gea currently earns £375,000 a week
- The Spaniard has been given a lower ‘take it or leave it’ offer to extend his terms.
- New signings Varane, Maguire and Casemiro all earn below £200,000 a week
The new wage structure will prevent players from earning more than their teammates. As per the report the decision to make changes to the salary structure was done to avoid a ‘culture of dressing-room jealousy’. De Gea has been given a far lower ‘take it or leave it’ offer. Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw also signed deals last year which have been below the £200,000 a week mark.

Other senior layers Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, and Casemiro are all in the same pay bracket (£180,000 to £200,000 a week). However, they could face sanctions if Manchester United fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. The report also states that the idea behind the move is to have more players paid at that same rather than splurging out £500,000 a week an individual.
The new structure does put Marcus Rashford’s future in doubt. The English international is the club’s top scorer and has interest from Paris Saint-Germain. The Red Devils did trigger his one-year extension, but PSG could offer a hefty rise. It remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old makes the switch.
