Manchester City legend Ilkay Gundogan left the Cityzens last summer to join La Liga giants Barcelona. And now after spending a year at the Catalan club, the German midfielder is on his way back. The midfield maestro has reportedly left Barcelona on a free to return back to his beloved Manchester City.
It will be a homecoming for the skipper who is slated to sign a 1 year deal with the Manchester Blues. The player was reportedly unhappy during his time in Spain. And now when the situation arose and the opportunity presented, Gundogan didn’t hesitate to jump ships to return to England and the Premier League.
Gundogan reunites with Manchester City
Reports from England emerge that Gundogan will sign a One-year contract with the Premier League champions. However, the 33-year old German will have the option to extend his stay for a further 12 months. In his bid to facilitate the move to Premier League, Gundogan has forgone his 2 year salary which Barcelona would have owned him.
Having joined the Catalan giants only last summer, Gundogan featured for his club in 36 games under manager Xavi. But when it was decided that Xavi won’t continue, Gundogan’s place in the team dropped considerably. It is believed that Gundogan doesn’t fit according to the plans of new Barcelona manager Hansi Flick.
