Madrid have won 15 of their last 16 Champions League games against Italian sides, winning all eight such away games in this run. The exception was a 3-1 home defeat to Juventus in April 2018. That defeat came in a tie which they won on aggregate anyway.

Real Madrid started the game on an attacking note, using their flanks to attack the Napoli box. Some chances fell Napoli’s way too, and the Serie A side converted one of them in the 19th minute.

Kvaratskhelia’s left-sided corner was met by Natan, who climbed above Kepa to head against the crossbar. However, Ositgard was at the right place to power above two Madrid defenders. He headed the rebound into the roof of the net.

Real made a comeback in the 27th minute when the hosts gave away possession on their right. Bellingham laid the ball to his left for Vinicius. The Brazil international took a touch inside before coolly slotting a right-footed finish into the bottom-right corner.

Bellingham went on to score a wonderful solo goal in the 34th minute to provide Los Blancos with the lead. The English midfielder strode forward from near the halfway line, taking four Napoli players with him into the box. He then turned onto his right foot and picked out the bottom-right corner.

Napoli started the second half with vigour. The home side earned a penalty in the 54th minute. Nacho was deemed to have handled the ball when sliding to challenge Osimhen. The ball cannoned off his raised arm and out of play. Zielenski calmly slotted the ball past Kepa to get Napoli back into the game.

Real Madrid increased their intensity to find the winner. An unfortunate series of incidents for Napoli helped Los Blancos gain the upper hand in the tie again. Modric’s corner was cleared as far as Valverde. Valverde powered an absolute rocket towards the roof of the goal from around 25 yards out. Napoli goalkeeper Meret punched the swerving shot onto the crossbar. The rebound ricocheted off his head and into the back of the net.
