With Sergio Busquets out, Frenkie de Jong begins in midfield with Gavi and Pedri. Even if de Jong’s overall profile is a little more advanced, Barcelona hopes he can replace the departing club legend on a long-term basis following this summer. Sergi Roberto starting at centre defence for the Catalan club, with Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia on the bench, is the only other surprise. Real Betis moved quickly to fill Alex Moreno’s left-back position after he left for Aston Villa. According to reports, they have taken Brazilian full-back Abner Vinicius, 22, from Athletico Paranaense. In their battle for a Champions League spot, it’s a crucial signing for the team.

Despite possessing over 80% of the ball, Barça had a strong passing rhythm and tried to move the ball quickly to create openings inside an opponent’s tight structure. This gave them a good start to the half, forcing Betis to defend deep inside their half.

The only time the Catalans did generate a legitimate chance, it led to Pedri’s goal being disallowed because Raphinha was literally a toe-offside in the buildup. The Catalans wasted every excellent offensive situation with a sloppy pass or a poor choice in the final third.

Even though Betis had so little, they knew exactly how to use it, and every time they attacked, they posed a serious threat. They largely caused trouble in the air, and Germán Pezzella’s header required a superb save from Marc-André ter Stegen.

Pedri’s long pass found Ousmane Dembélé on the left wing, who beat his defender and set up Robert Lewandowski inside the box. Despite having his initial shot blocked, the Pole didn’t give up on the play and scored a pretty volley on the rebound to give Barça the lead just as Manuel Pellegrini’s team appeared to be about to take the lead.

The Blaugrana were ahead at halftime but far from comfortable, and Betis were poised to launch a blitz in the second half. Betis soon reacted with two good chances in less than 10 seconds that required two more outstanding Ter Stegen stops.

The first 30 minutes of the second half were played at a very slow pace as Betis had more possession of the ball but found it difficult to keep up the same level of intensity from the end of the first. Meanwhile, Barça adopted a more cautious strategy and positioned more players behind the ball to close down spaces and try to score on the counter. With only 15 minutes remaining, Nabil Fekir equalised the score after the Blaugrana made a costly error in defence and failed to clear their lines at the edge of the box.

Ansu Fati’s spectacular goal gave Barça the lead again just three minutes into the extra period, giving them a strong start. But Betis wasn’t going to go down without a fight, and they tied the score thanks to an excellent backheel finish from replacement Loren Morón and a lovely play down the right wing by Luiz Henrique.

Although Betis went down to 10 men when Guardado was sent off in the middle of the extra time period, Barça couldn’t take advantage and the final whistle came to send this one to penalties. The second half of extra time had very little action as both teams were obviously not going to take any risks and would rather go to penalties.

Ter Stegen came into play, saving two consecutive penalties against Juanmi and William Carvalho. Pedri then converted the ensuing penalty to give Barça a 4-2 shootout victory and advance them to the Final.
