Raphael Varane, Manchester United’s ‘unhappy’ centre back, has been linked with a move to German heavyweights Bayern Munich. Varane joined United in 2021 in a £42 million trade from Real Madrid. He forged an effective partnership with Lisandro Martinez last season.

But, it seems like the defender has been out of favour for a while now. The French defender is assessing his options right now. The German giants, Bayern Munich are interested in roping him in.

Raphael Varane on the move from Man United to Bayern?

Despite denying any feud with Raphael Varane, United manager Erik ten Hag has routinely chosen to leave out the four-time Champions League champion. With Harry Maguire’s revival, Hag has frequently selected 35-year-old Jonny Evans or Victor Lindelof to accompany the Englishman, leaving Varane on the bench.

Now, the former Real Madrid player has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, which may come as soon as January.

According to Sky Sports Germany, Bayern Munich, have internally considered bringing the 30-year-old to the Allianz Arena. Raphael Varane might be available for as little as €20 million (£17.5 million) to €30 million (£26.2 million). This appears to be a steal for such an experienced defender.

The major stumbling block would be the Frenchman’s salary. His salary is about £340,000 per week, which is one of United’s top paid players. Despite his salary, Raphael Varane has only started one of Manchester United’s last eight games.

Ten Hag has stated that benching the World Cup winner was a tactical move rather than a result of a fallout. He said, ‘It is about tactical reasons why I chose these partnerships. I think Harry and Jonny did well. What I said last year, Harry didn’t play a lot, so I was very happy with Raphael Varane’s performances. I have always been happy with his performance. But in this moment, Harry is playing very well and there is internal competition.’

It remains to be seen what happens with Raphael Varane, whether he decides to pursue a transfer or fight for his place at Old Trafford.

Red Devils identify Gianluca Mancini as replacement

Roma centre-back Gianluca Mancini has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for Manchester United. The club is set to sign at least one defender in 2024. Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag is well equipped in the middle of defense with Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans.

Martinez is expected to return in the second half of the year after another relatively quick foot operation. But Raphael Varane has been strongly linked with a move.

Man United continue to be linked with Benfica’s Antonio Silva, Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio, while Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo are also said to be a target.

According to Il Romanista, a new name has been added to the list, with the 20-time English champions eyeing Mancini as a real target. The report claims that an offer of around €20m (£17.5m) could be enough to convince Roma to sell their vice-captain, despite his importance.
