NorthEast United FC sensation Parthib Gogoi scored in his third consecutive Indian Super League (ISL) appearance this season, but Punjab FC managed to hold the Highlanders to a 1-1 draw at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Friday. Gogoi, 20, shot from outside of the 18-yard box in his trademark style at the brink of half-time to put Juan Pedro Benali’s men ahead in the game. However, the ISL debutants equalised courtesy of Melroy Assisi in the 63rd minute as both teams walked away with a point each to their name from this contest.

Punjab FC vs NorthEast United preview
Coached by Staikos Vergetis, Punjab FC gained promotion in ISL by winning the I-League. However, their joy lasted only a short while, as they faced ISL champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant in their first encounter. The Mariners toiled with the Punjab FC defence to win the tie 3-1 in a convincing manner.
Punjab produced a much better display in their second match against FC Goa. However, it was not enough as the Goa achieved a slim 1-0 win to notch up their first points of ISL. We fought a lot in one year in the I-League to live in this moment. Even though we have started with two not-so-good results, we will try to take advantage of our home here and succeed to get our first victory,” Punjab FC head coach Staikos Vergetis said before the match.

NorthEast United has picked themselves up pretty well after their loss to Mumbai FC in the first match of ISL. The Highlanders lost by a slim margin of 2-1 to Des Buckingham’s side. However, their second match against Chennaiyin FC produced a chance for the Highlanders to rectify themselves and they took it with both hands. They beat Chennaiyin FC 3-0 in a near-perfect display at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium.
The way the Highlanders kept their calm to take home a clean sheet will definitely provide confidence to NEUFC head coach Juan Pedro Benali and assistant coach Naushad Moosa. “There was a lot to take from our first match, though we lost the game. We really worked on our weaknesses and shortcomings. In the second match, we were much better and got a positive result,” assistant coach Naushad Moosa said before the match.
