Kylian Mbappe, who has a thigh ailment, is kept on the sidelines by PSG manager Christophe Galtier, while Lionel Messi, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, starts alongside Neymar. The projected starting lineup is a 3-5-2. The injured Nordi Mukiele and Renato Sanches are not included in the team.

Bayern will look to teenager Jamal Musiala for attacking inspiration as Sadio Mane is still unable to play for the German champions. Thomas Muller recently passed a fitness test, but manager Julian Nagelsmann chooses to start Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as the centre striker instead. There are three players out: Lucas Hernandez (torn ACL), Manuel Neuer (broken leg), and Noussair Mazraoui (heart problem).

With Kingsley Coman scoring against his former team in a 1-0 victory against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their heavyweight round of 16 match, Bayern Munich put themselves in a strong position to advance to the Champions League quarterfinals.

The German champions outplayed their lacklustre hosts for the majority of the match in a rematch of the Bayern-winning 2020 final. And they scored the lone goal thanks to Coman’s shot that Gianluigi Donnarumma let slip through his grasp in the 53rd minute.

Even though Kylian Mbappe was only healthy enough to play off the bench for the French champions, he nevertheless scored twice, only to have both goals disallowed for offside as PSG erupted in the last minutes. After Benjamin Pavard received a second yellow card in stoppage time, Bayern finished the game with 10 men, but they had enough to hold on and secure an important lead away from home.

PSG will need to put on a significantly better performance in the return leg in Munich in three weeks if they want to keep their quest for their first Champions League championship from becoming longer. This is their third straight loss in all competitions.

Lionel Messi’s return to the starting lineup for PSG after missing their 3-1 loss to Monaco on Saturday was encouraging. Warren Zaire-Emery, 16, started in Mbappe’s absence, making him the youngest player to ever open a Champions League knockout match. From the first whistle on, Bayern took charge, controlling possession while PSG struggled mightily to keep the ball and occasionally even leave their own half.

With three defenders and a lone attacker, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting had plenty of help from both wide players Joao Cancelo and Coman as well as centre players Leon Goretzka, Leroy Sane, and Jamal Musiala against PSG’s rigid 4-4-2. A genuine threat on the PSG goal was the only thing missing from the visitors’ first-half effort. Just before halftime, Donnarumma got down well to stop a low attempt from Joshua Kimmich after the ball fell to him just beyond the penalty box. This was his only notable save of the first period.

However, the French champions were also appreciative of some alert goalkeeping from Sergio Ramos and Nuno Mendes to thwart clear-cut attempts. Galtier changed the lineup at halftime to match Bayern’s back three with Presnel Kimpembe in place of Achraf Hakimi because PSG had only one shot on goal in the first half.

However, Bayern’s halftime replacement had an almost instant impact and scored the game’s first goal. Alphonso Davies whipped in a deep cross from the left eight minutes after Coman replaced Cancelo, and Coman was left entirely free at the back post to side-foot a low volley that Donnarumma should have done better with.

Then, with Mbappe still doing enough to give PSG the kind of attacking danger they had been lacking, the team suddenly came to life. The France forward was initially stopped by Yann Sommer as he advanced on goal, and after Neymar’s follow-up shot rebounded into the goal, he was adjudged to be offside. When Mbappe finished a cut-back from Mendes with eight minutes left, the Parc des Princes believed there had been an equaliser. However, a VAR check revealed that Mendes had been slightly offside during the buildup.
