The president of Paris Saint-Germain, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, spearheads a shift in the club’s strategy that could result in Lionel Messi departing when his contract expires this summer. This shift may also lead to a reevaluation of the prospects of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe at the club.

New contract for Messi, is not a priority

According to a Mirror Football exclusive, Paris Saint-Germain has shifted its focus away from prioritizing a contract extension for Lionel Messi, who is set to become a free agent this summer.

Barcelona is reportedly interested in re-signing the Argentine superstar. Still, their financial challenges, as well as Messi’s preference to remain in Europe, may prompt PSG to resume negotiations with him.

Meanwhile, Al-Khelaifi is committed to revamping the club’s strategy to prioritize the recruitment of top French talent and to provide more significant opportunities for youth players who have been groomed within the club’s ranks. PSG is set to open a cutting-edge academy later this year.

PSG is focused on the future

The transformation at PSG had already commenced a year ago, with the appointment of Frenchman Christophe Galtier as a manager in place of Mauricio Pochettino. The club also brought in six new players during the summer, with the oldest being 26-year-old Fabian Ruiz.

They simultaneously streamlined their first-team squad by letting go of numerous players on loan, and some of them may be up for permanent transfers this summer, as they are not under contract with the club anymore.

Key players like Mauro Icardi, Georginio Wijnaldum, Keylor Navas, Leandro Paredes, and Ander Herrera are on that list.

However, the most significant news from last summer was PSG’s successful contract extension with Kylian Mbappe, which secured him for an additional two years with an option to extend it further until 2025. PSG’s intention was to make the Paris-born forward the face of the club’s medium-term future, as he is a local talent and embodies what the club wants to represent.

Do Neymar & Mbappe have a future at PSG?

PSG has no intention of letting Kylian Mbappe leave this summer, and the French striker has not expressed any desire to depart. However, the club is aware of how close they came to losing him as a free agent to Real Madrid last year.

As a result, they are keen to avoid a repeat scenario and hope to secure a long-term agreement that ensures any future transfer will be on their terms as well as the players.

The future of Neymar may pose a more pressing issue this summer. The 31-year-old Brazilian has endured another injury-ravaged season, and his high-profile status and earnings make him one of the club’s top earners. Despite this, he remains the world’s most expensive player, having joined PSG for a fee of £198 million from Barcelona in 2017.
