Premier League: Chances of Title Playoffs – The final showdown for the Premier League heats down to two competitive rivals Manchester City and Liverpool who are currently separated by just a solitary point after playing 34 games. However, the question remains as to whether a play-off between the two sides would take place if, after 38 games, the teams stand the same on points and other criteria, and eventually a winner cannot be adjudged. Follow Premier League Live Updates on InsideSport.IN

Though the idea initially might seem a bit farfetched, there is quite a possibility that a play-off should take place to differentiate the winner. The idea for the playoff would only take place should certain criteria are met. Both the teams, in this case, Liverpool and Manchester City will not only have to be level on points but also on goal differences and followed by goals scored.

If the above three criteria are found to be in level terms then the head-to-head stat and which team has scored the most away goals in these head-to-head games will be checked. If under these circumstances both the teams cannot be separated, then a play-off match will be decided by the Premier League board.

Both Manchester City and Liverpool are separated by a single point in the standings and also in the goal difference charts. City currently has 83 points and the scales could be balanced if, on the final day, City loses to Aston Villa and Liverpool play out a draw against Wolves.

Liverpool has a +2 advantage in the goals scored list and has a +64 difference in the goal difference table in comparison to City’s goal difference of +63.

Liverpool currently has a goal difference of +64, one goal better than City’s +63. They also hold a two-goal advantage in the goals scored tally. Both the teams played out two 2-2 draws this season in the Premier League, therefore the head-to-head stat won’t be a bother.

The Premier League handbook states “If two clubs cannot be separated by operation of Rule C.17.1 and C.17.2, a play-off on a neutral ground, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the board”

According to the norms of the Premier League, in case of a playoff, the game will take place at a neutral ground so that no team can take home advantage. As of now, the Premier League has sent no itinerary to any ground for a potential playoff game.
