Premier League: VAR Wrong Decisions: During the first half of the season, Premier League officials reportedly made six improper VAR interventions, including one that disallowed an Arsenal goal against Manchester United. Six errors from 48 overturned judgments in the games before the World Cup break were discovered by an independent panel made up of three former players, members from the Premier League, and members of the referee’s organization PGMOL. The six wrong VAR decisions are as follows:

  • Wilfried Zaha scored on the rebound of a penalty awarded to Villa in the 55th minute after Lucas Digne was penalised for handball to give Palace the lead 2-1.
  • Jarrod Bowen was found to have fouled Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Maxwel Cornet’s 90th-minute equaliser for 2-2 was disallowed.
  • Tyrick Mitchell’s own goal in the 51st minute was disallowed for a build-up foul on Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita by Newcastle’s Joe Willock.
  • Because of a foul committed by Martin Odegaard on Christian Eriksen during the buildup, Gabriel Martinelli’s goal for Arsenal in the 12th minute was disallowed.
  • Douglas Luiz of Villa was handed a straight red card for behaviour in the 62nd minute after VAR determined that he had headbutted Aleksandar Mitrovic.
  • Brentford received a penalty after Forest goalkeeper Dean Henderson fouled Brentford forward Yoane Wissa.

The strike by Gabriel Martinelli that would have given Arsenal a 1-0 lead at Old Trafford in the 12th minute is the most contentious of all of them. In response to a foul by Martin Odegaard on Christian Eriksen during the build-up, the goal should be disallowed, according to VAR Lee Mason’s advice to on-pitch referee Paul Tierney. United eventually prevailed 3-1 in the game. However, the evaluation found that the goal ought to have stood.

Another choice that ought to have stood was West Ham’s Maxwel Cornet’s 90th-minute equaliser in a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea in early September. Because Jarrod Bowen was found to have fouled Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy just before Cornet scored, that was overturned by VAR. The study also revealed a number of more wasted opportunities, including two West Ham goals from their 3-1 victory against Fulham at home that ought to have been ruled out for handball.

It occurs as veteran Premier League official Howard Webb assumes the role of PGMOL’s chief officiating officer with the mission of raising standards both on-field and at the Stockley Park VAR centre. To assist officials who use the technology, a committed VAR coach has been appointed. In the coming year, Webb also intends to visit every Premier League club to talk about the technology.
