Pep Guardiola extends contract with Manchester City, to stay for two more seasons

Pep Guardiola extends his Manchester City stay with a two-year deal, aiming for more trophies after an already historic tenure of 18 major titles.

Pep Guardiola will continue as Manchester City’s manager for at least two more seasons after 2024-25. On Thursday, the 53-year-old signed a two-year contract extension, extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium. This move ensures Guardiola’s time at City will surpass a decade, making him the club’s longest-serving manager since Les McDowall in 1963.

Dismissing exit rumours

There were speculations about Guardiola leaving after this season, especially after the announcement of director of football Txiki Begiristain’s exit. Additionally, Guardiola was linked to the England job after Gareth Southgate stepped down following the Euro 2024 final loss. However, the Football Association opted to appoint Thomas Tuchel instead.

Guardiola’s gratitude

Expressing his excitement, Guardiola said, “Manchester City means so much to me. This is my ninth season, and we’ve had incredible moments together. I am thrilled to stay for two more seasons.” He thanked the club’s owners, players, staff, and fans for their trust and support.

Focus on more trophies

Guardiola has already cemented his legacy as City’s most successful manager, winning 18 major trophies, including the 2023 Champions League and six Premier League titles. He also boasts a remarkable 72% win rate. As he looks ahead, Guardiola is determined to add more silverware to City’s collection. “Winning more trophies will be my focus,” he said.

Pep with City

Pep Guardiola’s journey with Manchester City, which began in 2016, has been nothing short of revolutionary. Under his leadership, City has clinched six Premier League titles, highlighted by an unprecedented quadruple in 2018/19. In 2023, Guardiola guided the team to their first UEFA Champions League victory, securing a historic treble.

Alongside these wins, he has added multiple FA Cups and Carabao Cups to the club’s cabinet. More than the trophies, Guardiola has redefined City’s footballing philosophy with his emphasis on possession-based, attacking play, making them a dominant and feared force in world football.
