Ousmane Dembele Leaves Barcelona, signs new contract with PSG until 2028

PSG officially signed Dembele for 5-year contract. He was delighted to be joining Paris St Germain and can’t wait to play for the new club.

Paris Saint Germain have officially confirmed the signing of Ousmane Dembele on a five-year deal. The Barcelona star was heavily linked with the Ligue 1 giants and he completed a successful move to Paris ahead of the new season.

The 26-year-old forward joins the French club for 50.4 million euros (£43.5m). He joined Barca in 2017 from German club, Borussia Dortmund for a fee reportedly worth up to £135.5m. He played an important role in Barcelona’s La Liga triumph last season. They won the first top-flight title since the departure of Messi.

Dembele featured in 185 matches for the Catalan giants and scored 40 goals. He won three La Liga titles in 2018, 2019 and 2023. He also has two Copa del Rey and two Supercopa titles with Barcelona. He also featured in the World Cup final last year and presented his national team 37 times.

Dembele told the club website: “I’m delighted to be joining Paris St Germain and can’t wait to play for my new club. I hope I can continue to grow here and make all the club’s fans proud.”

Dembele extended his contract with Barcelona until the summer of 2024. His release clause was set to €50 million, and later raised to €100 million in the ongoing summer. PSG needed a striker who can add value to the attack and Dembele would be a good option.

PSG are considering the Frenchman as the potential replacement for Kylian Mbappe who has been put on sale by the club amid the transfer saga. Mbappe and Neymar are out of the squad ahead of the season opener. Meanwhile, Mbappe reacted on the signing of Dembele and congratulated the former Barca man. “Welcome home my brother,” Mbappé wrote on social media. “So happy to see you here. The adventure begins!!!”

Barcelona now have Raphinha and Ferran to cover his potential exit. Xavi has recently called for more reinforcements, and Dembele’s departure is likely to shake up their transfer plans. They will start their season against Getafe and Barca has to deal with the gap left by the Frenchman. The Catalan giants will look for a new attacker before the deadline day.
