Olympiacos vs Panathinaikos suspended following player being struck by fireworks

The Greek Super League match between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos was abandoned after defender Juankar was hit by explosives.

Olympiacos vs Panathinaikos: On Sunday, the Greek Super League match between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos was called off. It happened when a player was hit by a fireworks while warming up on the sidelines. The firecracker struck Panathinaikos’ Spanish defender Juankar five minutes into the second half, with the score tied at 1-1.

The club’s social media account posted: “A firecracker falls on the players of our team who are warming up. Juankar is on the ground injured.”

“Interruption in the match. Our team retires to the locker room.

The game was initially halted as Juankar received medical attention before being transported away on a medical cart. When the visiting team sent their substitutes out along the touchline to warm up, the score was 1-1.

Panathinaikos’ Spanish star Juankar, on the other hand, was hit by a firework thrown from the crowd. The meeting between two of Greece’s most powerful teams is notorious for violence both on and off the game.

The 33-year-old left-back was treated before being escorted away on a medical cart. With supporters still inside the stadium, the delay neared 60 minutes as information on what was going on became scant.

Juankar’s teammates and Panathinaikos personnel quickly followed. Panathinaikos subsequently tweeted another update, implying that their players were hesitant to leave the locker room.

Meanwhile, the Olympiacos players stayed on the pitch for around 30 minutes before heading back into the locker room. Around 9:30 p.m. local time, a tannoy broadcast stated that a decision on whether or not play will resume would be made shortly. However, the players never returned.

After more than three hours of play, the decision to quit the game was communicated to the audience. The Greek Football Federation has not yet conveyed its verdict on the outcome of the match.
