The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is all set to organise Indian Super Cup 2024 from January in Odisha. The Super Cup was first envisioned in 2018 in a bid to replace the Federation Cup. However, the competition had to be stopped after the 2019 edition due to Covid restrictions. It resumed in 2023 after a three year hiatus.
The dates of the Indian Super Cup 2024 has not been officially confirmed yet by AIFF. However, according to TOI journalist Marcus Mergulhao, AIFF has locked in on the dates for the tournament.
They have informed the clubs that Super Cup will start from January 9 in Odisha. According to to Mergulhao the final of the tournament will be played on 28 January. Mergulhao further said that the qualification matches for I-League teams will be held on January 9 and 10.
Super Cup format
The Super Cup is an inter-league knockout tournament played between teams from the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) and the Hero I-League. The champion of the 2023–24 I-League, and all 11 teams from the Indian Super League will gain direct access into the Super Cup’s group stage.
The four remaining berths in the qualifying round, which will consist of single-leg ties, will be decided by the teams who finished second through tenth in the 2023–24 I-League.
The 16 participating teams will be divided into four groups. The tournament will be played in a single round-robin format. Each group’s topper will advance to the semi-finals. The Super Cup is a hugely important tournament for the participating teams. The winner of the tournament gets a direct entry to the AFC Cup.
Last time out, ISL side Odisha FC won the competition by beating Bengaluru FC 2-1 in the final.
