In a major development, the French Professional leagues, Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, face the prospect of disappearing from the television screens, as they have not received any bids for the broadcasting rights, as per a report in The Sun. The report further suggests that there were no takers to stream the matches for a hefty sum of £693million/annually. The league’s broadcast partner for a long time, Canal Plus did not make a bid for the upcoming 2024-29 cycle.
Canal Plus has been the main broadcaster of French football since 1984 when paid TV services were first introduced. Meanwhile, the broadcaster has been engaged in conflict with the LFP since 2020.
The Lionel Messi/Neymar Factor
Earlier, this year, two greats Lionel Messi and Neymar exited from Paris Saint-Germain. Messi went to Inter Miami, while headed to Saudi Arabia, and now plays for Al Hilal. If reports are to be believed, PSG’s biggest player at the moment, Kylian Mbappe’s future is uncertain at the moment. That leaves the league without any star power, that could help them generate any sort of revenue through the broadcast rights.
Kylian Mbappe in Real Madrid?
The French player Kylian Mbappe’s contract with PSG expires next summer. The star has not renewed his contract, which makes it clear, that he doesn’t want to stay with the club. This means, either PSG needs to sell him during this winter transfer window or release him as a free agent. Hence, the saga between Mbappe, Real Madrid, and PSG could begin again.
