The giants of Ligue 1 are rumored to be looking to slash expenses due to worries that they may be breaking Financial Fair Play regulations. Last year, PSG received FFP fines and was fined £8.6 million. This year, £56.3 million might be on the line, depending on the club’s continued compliance with the regulations.

Messi’s £740,000 per week contract is therefore on the chopping board as the club seeks to lower their salary expenditure, according to L’Equipe. The French publication claims that teams in Saudi Arabia will offer the 35-year-old World Cup winner hefty deals if PSG decides to not renew his current deal. Even FC Barcelona is a potential option for Leo Messi as the Spanish club looks to bring their legend back to Spotify Camp Nou.

Sergio Ramos, the 37-year-old former Real Madrid defender, is another whose future is in doubt because, like Messi, his contract expires at the conclusion of the current campaign. Ex-France international, Jerome Rothen recently said that Messi’s salary is too high, and shifting him off the books could allow PSG to spread their investment across the squad.

Rothem was also critical of Messi not engaging with the PSG fans. He says the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner ‘never thanks the fans, he lowers his head and goes to the dressing room’. Rothem said, ‘Messi’s renewal is a joke. Managing Messi, Neymar and Mbappe is complicated. On top of that, his salary is very high.’

He continued, ‘I see PSG trapped in financial fair play because what they have to pay in wages has exploded. Now they will have the opportunity to recover a huge sum with Messi’s salary, this could allow them to hire and improve the squad. For all that, it’s a bad idea to renew with Messi.’

Leo has generated interest from all over the globe. Inter Miami has propped up as a potential location for Messi. Even Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia has been keen on getting Leo to the Middle East. Laporta has also been advocating openly about getting Messi back to Barcelona. Let’s wait and watch which path Messi decides to endure post this season.
