Newcastle United had an excellent season as they qualified for the Champions League 2023/24. The visiting side finished fourth in the table and they marked a solid return to European competition. Eddie Howe showed intent in the summer transfer window and it could work out for Newcastle to keep their momentum high in this extended season.

Newcastle United faced last season’s underdogs, Aston Villa in the season opener and they showed dominating display in front of the home crowd. The Magpies were ahead 2-1 at the end of the first half and they ended the scoreline with 5-1, courtesy of Alexander Isak’s brace. It helped them to start the Premier League season at the top of the table for the first time since 2007.
Eddie Howe’s men are unbeaten in Premier League from the last five matches. However, they won just one of their last four away games in the top flight. They have also conceded in each of their last nine away encounters. They held Man City for a 3-3 draw in the reverse fixture last season followed by a 2-0 loss at Etihad. They have defeated Man City just once in 31 meetings which came in January 2019. Newcastle have to deliver a terrific game of display at Etihad to retain their top spot.
Newcastle United are not dealing with any major concern. Meanwhile, Emil Krafth, Joe Willock and Javier Manquillo will be sidelined due to knee, hamstring and groin problems respectively. None of them would be considered for the selection in the first XI.
Eddie Howe went for a 4-3-3 formation and it allowed him to improve their attack. He would stick with the same combination he featured in the home game against Villa. Harvey Barnes made a substitute appearance in the season opener. The Englishman scored a goal and also provided an assist on his debut for the Magpies. He would be back in the main XI in place of Gordon.
Alexander Isak will lead the attack who scored twice last weekend. He will be supported by Barnes and Almiron. Anthony Gordon will be tried as a substitute and Callum Wilson is unlikely to find a place in XI despite a strike in the previous game.
