Netherland’s draw with France make Poland first team to be eliminated from Euro 2024 group stage

Poland lost their opening match, 2-1, to the Netherlands. The Poles would finish their Group D campaign with three points if they won their last match against France, but that would not be enough to move them up from fourth place.

After the Netherlands and France drew 0-0 on Friday night, Poland became the first team to be eliminated from Euro 2024. That match was played soon after Poland’s 3-1 loss to Austria earlier in the evening. Poland still have one game remaining, which is against France in Dortmund on Tuesday.

No way back for Poland

Poland lost their opening match, 2-1, to the Netherlands. The Poles would finish their Group D campaign with three points if they won their last match against France, but that would not be enough to move them up from fourth place.

If Austria lose to the Netherlands on Tuesday, they might also end the tournament with just three points. However, Poland will still finish below Austria even if they have a better goal differential because, in UEFA competitions, head-to-head record is the first tiebreaker used to separate teams that finish level on points, unlike at the FIFA World Cup. Meanwhile, France and the Netherlands already have four points each.

Robert Lewandowski’s injury Poland’s final nail in coffin

Due to the high caliber of the opposition, Poland were always expected to struggle in Group D, which was known as the “group of death” prior to the tournament. When star striker Robert Lewandowski was forced to miss the first round of games due to a thigh injury, their chances were further damaged.

Poland have now bowed out in the group stage at three of the past four European Championships.
