Odisha FC vs Bashundhara Kings: Odisha FC claims a narrow win over Bangladeshi outfit Bashundhara Kings to successfully secure a spot in the AFC Cup 2023-24 interzonal semifinal. Mourtada Fall’s lone header at the 61st minute proved to be the decisive moment, sealing Odisha’s place in the continental stage in their debut season.

The ISL team began their season with two straight losses to Mohun Bagan (0-4) and Bashundhara Kings (2-3). They quickly recovered, however, with a hat-trick of victories. Odisha FC upset the highly-rated Mohun Bagan Super Giants 5-2, delaying qualification till the last day. Mohun Bagan Super Giant, on the other side, lost 1-0 to Maldives team Maziya S&R.

The game started cautiously, with both teams aware that a draw would be enough for Bashundhara to advance. Odisha’s Diego Mauricio and Lalthathang Khawlhring tried to break the deadlock, but chances were scarce.

The turning point came in first-half injury time when Gafurov of Bashundhara received a straight red card. Odisha seized the opportunity in the second half, with Roy Krishna and Diego testing Bashundhara’s defense. Eventually, Mourtada Fall’s powerful header from Jahouh’s corner secured the much-needed lead for Odisha.

Diego took another shot from 20 yards, but Mehedi Hasan Srabon made a solid save. Bashundhara’s goalkeeper reacted swiftly, thwarting Krishna’s attempt and deflecting the ball wide after a skillful setup by Khawlhring.

The match showcased Odisha FC’s resilience and determination, earning them a well-deserved place in the AFC Cup’s interzonal semifinal.
