Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Liberia postponed after Morocco earthquake

The fixture, which was scheduled to take place today at 8:00 PM in Agadir as part of the final round of qualifiers for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire, has been rescheduled to a later date

The Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match between Morocco and Liberia has been postponed following the Morocco earthquake that took place late on Friday night.

The fixture, which was scheduled to take place today at 8:00 PM in Agadir as part of the final round of qualifiers for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, has been rescheduled to a later date.

“Following the earthquake that affected some regions in Morocco, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation announces the postponement of the match that was to take place on Saturday evening, September 9, 2023, between the national team and its Liberian counterpart, in the final round of the qualifiers for the 2024 African Cup of Nations – Côte d’Ivoire; Until a later time, in agreement with the Confederation of African Football,” Royal Moroccan Football Federation said in a statement released on their official website.

According to reports, over 820 people are dead and hundreds more are hurt after Friday night’s 6.8-magnitude earthquake in the Marrakech area.

“After this great injury, the national football family extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims, and wishes a speedy recovery to all the injured,” the Moroccan FA added in their statement.

Many football stars have joined in to express their condolences after the earthquake with Morocco stars Sofyan Amrabat and Hakim Ziyech among them.’

Hakim Ziyech posted a flag of Morocco in his Instagram with two praying emojis and a heart emoji.

Amrabat also took to Instagram and urged everyone to pray for the country and posted a collage of pictures which underlined the mass destruction that the earthquake caused.

Incidentally, Morocco scripted history in the FIFA World Cup 2022 by reaching the semi-finals of the tournament. Morocco knocked Spain and Portugal out before bowing out to France in the semi final.
