Mohun Bagan fail to show up for Kolkata Derby in CFL, East Bengal awarded walkover

As Mohun Bagan Super Giant failed to appear for the Kolkata Derby in the CFL Super Six game, East Bengal receives a walkover from the IFA.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant did not show up for the Calcutta Football League (CFL) Super Six Kolkata Kolkata derby against East Bengal . The MBSG administration had previously submitted a letter refusing to play, citing fixture overload and “ineffective scheduling by IFA.” The event undoubtedly brings back many memories for fans from CFL Kolkata Derby from back in 2016. The Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal CFL Super Six match was scheduled today at Naihati Stadium at 2PM.

“Because of the ineffective scheduling by IFA we have been given to understand most of the teams in Super Six skipped their games as other tournaments (have) started, (and it) questions total sanity of the CFL,” Bagan said in a letter addressed to IFA secretary Anirban Dutta according to TOI.

On September 21, Mohammedan Sporting defeated Mohun Bagan 2-0 to claim the title. That was the champions’ last match, and Mohun Bagan’s first game in the Super Six phase.

There have been no Bagan matches since then while East Bengal has four matches left as well. The Indian Football Association (IFA) confirmed the new derby date on 30 November in its latest attempt to end the season in a recent email to both teams.

Bagan’s protest is related to their impending ISL encounter against hosts Hyderabad FC, which has been moved to Bhubaneswar due to Telangana assembly elections. Juan Ferrando’s team will depart for Odisha’s capital city on Thursday evening.

The IFA, however, has insisted that the match is on schedule. East Bengal, did turn up for the game. With Mohun Bagan not coming, the Red and Gol brigade were given a walkover. With Kolkata Derby being one of the oldest Rivalry ever, it reminded fans of the Kolkata Derby back in 2016 in the same tournament.

While Mohun Bagan did not showup, East Bengal players waited for 30 minutes before getting a walkover. The Red and Gold Brigade went on to win the CFL that year.
