A force to be reckoned with in UEFA Champions League

Real Madrid have always been a force to be reckoned with when it came to UEFA Champions League. They initially established their dominance by winning the European Cup, the predecessor to the UEFA Champions League, five times in a row starting from the tournament’s inception in 1956. Key figures in this golden era included Argentine legend Alfredo Di Stefano and Spanish stalwarts Francisco ‘Paco’ Gento and José María Zárraga, the only three players to be involved in all five victories.

After their early success, Real Madrid experienced a drought in Europe’s premier club competition from 1960 until the late 20th century, with the notable exception of the 1965-66 season when Paco Gento led the team to another triumph. This victory marked Gento as the player with the most European Cup final wins in history, totalling six.

15 elusive Champions League titles

The club reasserted its European prowess in the 1997-98 season by defeating a formidable Juventus side, which included legends like Didier Deschamps, Edgar Davids, and a young Zinedine Zidane. Madrid continued their resurgence by clinching the title again in 1999-2000 and 2001-02. In the latter, Zidane, who had joined Real Madrid, scored a spectacular goal in the final against Bayer Leverkusen.

Following these successes, Real Madrid embarked on a quest for La Decima, their tenth Champions League title, a feat they achieved in the 2013-14 season with Cristiano Ronaldo at the forefront. With Ronaldo leading the attack and Zidane as the manager, Madrid made history by winning the Champions League three consecutive times in 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2017-18. Their dominance was momentarily interrupted in the 2014-15 season when rivals Barcelona, propelled by Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Neymar, claimed the title.

Real Madrid’s latest triumph came in the 2021-22 season when they defeated Liverpool, securing their 14th Champions League title and further cementing their legacy as European football’s most successful club.
