Turkey’s Merih Demiral emerged as their hero after his brilliant brace against Austria in the UEFA Euro 2024 Round of 16 clash. But now as per the latest reports, the Turkish defender can be slapped with a ban by the UEFA. The UEFA has opened up an investigate for celebrations which has far-right connotations.
Demiral hogged the limelight after his 2 goals against Austria which took Turkey to the semi finals of the UEFA Euro 2024. But Demiral’s wolf celebration has been perceived lightly by the UEFA. It is believed that the defender’s Wolf salute was a direct induction at the far-right nationalist group Grey Wolves which is banned in Austria.
Will Merih Demiral be banned by UEFA?
The final outcome will be known after UEFA concludes their investigation on the matter. While the UEFA has officially claimed that investigations are open, the player on the other hand defended his actions.
“An investigation has been opened in accordance with Article 31(4) of the Uefa Disciplinary Regulations in relation to the alleged inappropriate behaviour of the Turkish Football Federation player, Merih Demiral. Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course,” said UEFA’s statement.
After scoring, Demiral was spotted celebrating with a weird gesture resembling that of a wolf. “I had a specific celebration in mind, something connected to my Turkish identity. I am incredibly proud to be Turkish, and I felt that pride deeply after scoring. I wanted to express that, and I’m very happy I did,” Demiral said.
The Turkish defender further defended himself saying he saw the fans celebrating and wanted to join them in the celebration. This can prompt the UEFA to open yet another investigation on the fans.
