Former Man United star Mason Greenwood can opt for the change in his international outfit as he looks to find growth in his international career. He could resurrect his international career with Jamaica. The 22-year-old returned to football action with Getafe after his exit from Manchester United.
Greenwood is slowly finding a base in Spain and he is improving with Getafe. La Liga has given him a chance to focus on his career following a controversial drama in England. He scored his first goal for the club against Celta Vigo in a 2-2 draw last time out. It was the first strike from the player since January 2022.
Greenwood’s club career takes a speed and after one season, we will see more growth in it. However, the story remains uncertain when it comes to England’s national team. Jamaica’s manager Heimir Hallgrimsson is now open to welcoming him to his squad. It could be a career-defining moment for him if he looks for more opportunities.
Jamaica’s manager Heimir Hallgrimsson opens up on the possibility of getting Greenwood in the squad, “We would like to have the best talent on our team. If he gets his former fitness and former levels, then for sure he would have that level to help Jamaica.”
If we look back to his England career, he last played in 2020 under Southgate. It was just one appearance from the Three Lions. Switching to Jamaica should be a welcome move but it depends on few parameters. He can move to Jamaica because he is of Jamaican descent. The Jamaican federation must make a formal appeal to FIFA. It won’t be a violation of any FIFA rule.
Mason Greenwood will not be the only one who will play for the Reggae Boyz. Premier League stars Ethan Pinnock, Demarai Gray and Michail Antonio have played for Jamaica. The international break is going on and Greenwood will play on October 21 when Getafe will face Real Betis in La Liga. Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side will take part in the CONCACAF Nations League and they are also targeting FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification after FIFA’s increased number of teams.
