Sabitzer joined United on loan from Bayern Munich in January as a substitute for Christian Eriksen, who was out with an ankle injury. He has now played a crucial role in United’s Champions League push, winning the Carabao Cup along the way.

A club statement read: “Everyone at the club is disappointed to lose Marcel’s services, as the Reds chase a strong finish to the season in the Premier League and FA Cup, and we are grateful for his contribution to our progress so far.”

There has been much discussion about whether Ten Hag would opt to offer Sabitzer a new contract at the conclusion of the season, as the United manager looks to recruit midfielders this summer. However, the 29-year-old’s injury may mean he is unlikely to be awarded a permanent contract, with no hint of a new contract on the horizon and presumably no more opportunities to impress Ten Hag.

In the FA Cup quarter-finals, he scored an amazing backheel against Fulham.
