With the deal to bring Frenkie de Jong to Old Trafford continuing to drag on, other targets have been identified in other areas and Lisandro Martinez, the Ajax defender, is one of Erik ten Hag’s prime targets.
Earlier on Saturday, it emerged that United had lodged an official bid for the 24-year-old, with Old Trafford chiefs keen on beating Arsenal to his signature.
Mikel Arteta’s side are also interested in the Argentina international but according to reports, United are favourites to sign him this summer. Last week, the Londoners put a bid of €40m (made up of €35m as a fixed fee and €5m in bonuses) on the table to Ajax for Martínez.
And United have now responded with an offer of €41m plus €4m in potential performance-related add-ons but the story claims that the Dutch champions are unlikely to accept the proposal.

That’s according to The Athletic, who add that United are in advanced negotiations with the Amsterdam club over his transfer, with belief that he would be keen on making the switch to Manchester.
Furthermore, Martinez’s relationship with Ten Hag is thought to be a factor, with the versatile defender looking to reunite with his former boss.
Their stance throughout this summer has been that they value the 24-year-old at €50m and do not want to sell him for less, while their preference remains not to lose him at all.
However, the Ajax hierarchy are aware that Martínez, who joined from Defensa y Justicia in 2019 for €7m, does dream of playing in the Premier League and a move to United would offer him the opportunity to work under Erik ten Hag again.
He has played 118 times for the Amsterdam outfit, scoring six goals and providing the same number of assists.
