Anthony Martial’s Manchester United time coming to an end
Fans have grown increasingly frustrated with Anthony Martial due to his body language and lack of mobility on the pitch. Recently, eyebrows were raised among the staff when the 27-year-old opted to wear gloves during a match at Old Trafford, despite the weather being relatively mild.
Martial was signed by Manchester United from Monaco in 2015 at the age of 19, for a transfer fee of £36 million, which at the time was a record amount paid for a teenager. Including potential add-ons, the fee had the possibility of reaching £58 million.
Anthony Martial enjoyed a successful debut season, finding the net 17 times. His performance peaked in the 2019-2020 season when he achieved a career-high of 23 goals.
However, in the subsequent three seasons, he has struggled to maintain his scoring form, managing only 16 goals. Additionally, he has been plagued by injuries, which has resulted in inconsistent appearances on the field.
Sevilla loan did not work out
During the previous season, Anthony Martial was loaned out to Sevilla. However, his loan spell was not successful as he managed to score only one goal in 12 appearances, leading to his return to Manchester United. Manager Erik ten Hag has consistently supported Martial, even going as far as stating that the team performs better with him on the field.
After the incident on Saturday when Martial walked off the pitch, Ten Hag chose not to publicly criticize him. Instead, he mentioned that Martial eventually returned to the bench.
