Given there was blood spilling from the center-half’s head the referee Craig Pawson instantly signaled to the bench and medical staff rushed to the England international’s aid and swiftly dealt with what looked like a nasty gash above his eye. The collision took place in the 83rd minute and despite sustaining a cut on his head, the former Leicester City player decided to continue until the end of the game after being patched up with a headband.

Fred turned out to be Manchester United’s unlikely hero as the Brazilian netted late in the second half to give Ralf Rangnick’s men a narrow win over Crystal Palace in the German’s first game in charge. The Brazilian curled a sublime effort into the top corner, just as it looked like Rangnick’s first match was going to end in a goalless draw.
