Man United vs Newcastle United: Newcastle United on Wednesday produced an excellent display to knock Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United out of the EFL Cup. Goals from Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock sealed the tie for Eddie Howe’s men as Man United had no answer to the Magpies’ aggressive gameplay.
Ten Hag made seven changes to the United side which started Sunday’s derby defeat, with only Onana, Dalot, Maguire and Lindelof keeping their places. Casemiro returned as captain after recovering from a knock, was partnered by Mejbri in midfield. Martial spearheaded a new-look attack with Rashford and Fernandes on the bench, while Wan-Bissaka was also among the substitutes following a spell on the sidelines.
Howe, meanwhile, made eight alterations to the team which began Newcastle’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Wolves on Saturday. Gordon, Joelinton and Longstaff kept their places, the latter as captain on his 150th Newcastle appearance. Recent arrivals Hall and Livramento both got a chance to impress, while former United loanee Dubravka replaced Nick Pope between the sticks. First-team regulars Trippier, Wilson, Almiron, Burn and Guimaraes were among the Magpies’ substitutes.
Newcastle briskly started the game, creating quite a few chances. Howe had to substitute Matt Targett in the fifth minute because of an injury. Miguel Almiron replaced him. The injury helped Newcastle in the long run as substitute Almiron opened the scoring in the half an hour mark. Newcastle broke at lightning pace and took the lead through Almiron. Livramento outmuscled Garnacho inside his own half before bursting over halfway. He went past Mount with ease before slipping a pass into the path of Almiron, who tucked a neat finish into the bottom-right corner on the slide.
The Magpies doubled their lead barely eight minutes later through Lewis Hall. The young left-back sparked incredible scenes in the away end with a lovely finish. United were slow to reset from a free-kick as Almiron and Willock combined down the Newcastle left. The latter’s cross was headed out to the edge of the box by Maguire, and Hall met it with a controlled volley on his left foot, giving Onana no chance as it bounced into the bottom-right corner.
Joe Willock added a third for the Magpies in the second half. Willock held on to a loose ball and advanced to the edge of the area completely unopposed before whipping an excellent finish into the bottom-right finish.
