Both coaches chose teams that were among their strongest options. Diogo Dalot, Raphael Varane, Tyrell Malacia, and Antony replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, and Donny van de Beek in the four changes made by United from the victory over Bournemouth. The back five that were so effective at the Etihad are used once again by Frank Lampard. At right-back, Seamus Coleman replaces Nathan Patterson, and Tom Davies, Dwight McNeil, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are replaced by Ben Godfrey, Amadou Onana, and Neal Maupay. Anthony Gordon, a talisman, is back among the substitutes.

Earlier, Coady tied the score for Frank Lampard’s struggling Everton in minute 14 after De Gea botched a low cross.
After the break, the visitors thought they had a second equaliser, but Dominic Calvert-close-range Lewin’s attempt was disallowed for offside in the buildup after a VAR review, advancing United to the fourth round.

With the exception of Luke Shaw teaming up with Raphael Varane in the middle of defence, Man United manager Erik ten Hag demonstrated during his first appearance in the competition that he was taking the FA Cup seriously. He played a significant role in how quickly the home team took the lead. Since returning from the World Cup, Rashford has scored four goals in four games. This time, he played creator by slipping past a defender on the left side of the box and laying the ball across the goal for Antony to complete the finish.

At that point, it seemed as though United would easily win, especially after Anthony Martial missed a 20-yard field goal attempt shortly after. However, Everton was gifted a gift-wrapped entry back into the match out of thin air. Just after benefiting from a break when Demarai Gray’s shot rebounded off the post and sailed inches wide off the goalkeeper’s back, De Gea handed the opposition a goal.

Amadou Onana did well to create the space to squeeze in a cross but De Gea was caught completely unaware to allow the ball to ricochet between his legs and fall for Coady to produce a simple tap-in. United continued to threaten to go back in front. Martial was denied by Jordan Pickford when put through one-on-one while Rashford and Christian Eriksen also went close. But Everton, buoyed by leveling the score, were able to get more of a foothold in the contest as they sought to arrest a slide that saw them without a win since October.

The visitors’ resolve, though, would last only a few minutes into the second half. Right after losing Alex Iwobi to a worrying injury, Coady found the net at the Stretford End for the second time, this time sliding in and diverting the ball into his own goal. The credit, though, goes to Rashford, who gave a full display of his renewed confidence, befuddling Seamus Coleman and getting to the byline before his cut-back was met by Coady.

Insidesport

Everton continued to show belief and briefly thought they had pulled level once more but Rashford’s late penalty confirmed that they would be left to focus on a Premier League campaign that has seen them drop into the relegation zone.
