Pep Guardiola has made seven changes to his Manchester City lineup in preparation for Tuesday’s opening leg of the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid. Jack Grealish, Rodri, Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Bernardo Silva are all on the bench, while Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland both get the start.
Ilan Meslier, a young French custodian, has been benched, which is the big news out of the Leeds United camp. For his fourth appearance of the year, Joel Robles is chosen. His most recent game was in the FA Cup against Cardiff in January.
Hard-charging Ilkay Gundogan scored twice in as many minutes to help Manchester City defeat Leeds United 2-1 on Saturday, moving them four points ahead of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League. This victory extended their winning streak in the league to ten games.
Erling Haaland, a star striker for City, gladly sent the ball to Gundogan in the 84th minute so that he could take a penalty kick for what would have been a hat trick, but Leeds custodian Joel Robles easily stopped his effort.
The goal by Ikay Gundogan gives Manchester City the lead. Before cutting in and finding Gundogan on the outside of the box, De Bruyne uses the outside of his boot to find Mahrez out on the right. To score the winning goal for the hosts, the German takes a touch and strikes it into the bottom right corner!
Before Gundogan’s goal in the 19th minute from the edge of the 18-yard box off a feed from Riyad Mahrez, City had spun circles around Leeds with multiple quality scoring chances. Eight minutes later, Mahrez set up Gundogan once more for a goal that was an exact replica of his first.
The German doubles his day’s total from almost the same spot and gives his team a 2-0 lead after 27 minutes. This time, though, he lashes it across goal, leaving Robles helpless to do anything except watch as it sails past his left and into the goal. The first one was stroked into the bottom right. For Leeds, Rodrigo Moreno restored parity in the 85th minute.
Pep Guardiola’s team leads Arsenal with 82 points with four games remaining, and if the Gunners lose to Newcastle on Sunday, City will have all but guaranteed an illustrious third straight championship. Leeds are in a precarious position in 17th place, and all three clubs behind them have a game in hand. This is the team’s first game under temporary manager Sam Allardyce, who was parachuted in as a last-ditch effort to prevent relegation.
