Premier League leaders Manchester City and Chelsea are in danger of losing their place in the top flight. The news comes after Everton’s 10 point deduction set a worrying precedent, says a former financial adviser to the reigning champions.

Unfortunately for the Toffees, the deduction drops them to second last place in they Premier League. Although they plan to file an appeal.

City are accused of 115 breaches of the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play rules. Chelsea could be subject to an investigation over alleged payments connected to the Roman Abramovich’s former club.

Premier League bound to be concerned

Stefan Borson, a lawyer who has advised City in the past, has said Manchester City and Chelsea could face relegation if found guilty, according to The Sun.

Football finance expert Stefan Borson said, “There are too many things that ‘might’ happen if City are found against. It will be very serious — all hell will break loose.

It will turn into an enormous story — not just in respect of football but much wider than that. So many parties will be implicated. It will be an incredibly explosive situation.”

Borson has said relegation for City can be a possibility if they are found guilty.

“From a football perspective, it’s impossible to think City would not be relegated if all of these things were found against them,” he said, adding that the hearing in Manchester City’s case would happen sometime in 2024.

“The Premier League are bound to be concerned about what they would do if City are found guilty. The fact the League charged City with such serious matters shows you this is a very bold move,” he said.

They will have to charge Chelsea for off-book payments (under Abramovich) — I don’t see any way round it and it will inevitably be very serious for them. I’m confident they won’t get leniency simply because they’ve admitted it and it happened in the previous ownership.” Borson said about the London side.
