Major setback for Italy, Giorgio Scalvini suffers knee injury, likely to miss Euro 2024

Italy has already lost defender Francesco Acerbi due to a groin injury

Defending champions Italy suffered a major setback, with Atlanta defender Giorgio Scalvini being forced off the pitch in the final minutes of a Serie A match against Fiorentina with a suspected knee injury. Scalvini has been named to Italy’s preliminary 30-man squad for Euro 2024 and is expected to join his teammates in Coverciano tomorrow, alongside Gianluca Scamacca.

Will Giorgio Scalvini miss EURO 2024?

The 20-year-old attempted to win the ball on the right side but collapsed to the ground, probably due to an abnormal movement of his left knee. Atalanta physicians hurried onto the pitch, where Scalvini clutched his leg in anguish and struggled to fight back tears.

Scalvini will have medical tests later tonight to determine the degree of his injuries. Italy has already lost Francesco Acerbi due to a groin injury. They have been drawn with Spain, Croatia and Albania in Group B at Euro 2024, which starts on June 14. The Azzurris will play Turkey in a friendly on Tuesday and Bosnia & Herzegovina on June 9.
